Happy Birthday Eleanore

Yep, that would be my car…

The little gray Prius was delivered to our house last October 8th.

Over the past year she has

  • been filled up 27 times
  • cost me just under $900 in gas
  • racked up 8633 miles
  • only been filled with Chevron premium
  • and averaged 41 MPG

Granted I have a rather short daily commute (under 15-20 minutes each way) by LA standards and also spend a week out of each month not driving but i’ve also taken her to SF 3x in this year, which added to the miles.

The only major work needed was a replacement windshield within the first 2 months, thanks to a rock on the I-5.

For The Love Of Crows

Going bird crazy on my day off…

Geeking out today and reading ALOT about Urban Chicken Keeping and Homesteading – and came across bit of crow knowledge.

PET Suit

Ecogir’s 100% recycled suiting

Nice to see innovation in such a traditional part of apparel.  The real test will be if you can return the suit to them to up-cycle again – like Patagonia’s capilene.

Hail Seitan

Vegetarian, Vegan or just Starchetarian?

Vgn

I like milk and cheese way too much to be a vegan but at the moment am trying really hard to limit the amount of animal products I eat. Jess and I recently heard a little piece on NPR about the Post Punk Kitchen and their new cookbook, Veganomicon. Jess picked the book up 2 weeks ago so we could try out the recipes and while I haven’t been home long enough to attempt any of them yet, they all sound yummy and do-able. I’ll post the successes and failures as we try them and will be sure to include the opinions of my non-veggie husband as well.

I have to say I actually had a great vegan experience just this past week in New York. We had a dinner at Candle 79 and tried 6 different appetizers, had pumpkin seed and sage crusted seitan as my main (which i was too full to finish after trying all the other things) and an amazing pear phyllo tower thingy. I also tried Agave Nectar for the first time in my mint tea, instead of honey and it was a great substitue. It’s much subtler than honey, which can be overpowering sometimes. I’m going to pick some up next time I’m at the natural food store and experiment baking with it.

Hollywood Farmers Market

Soon to be a regular Sunday morning event.

Jess and I headed over to the Hollywood Famers’ Market this morning. I had resisted going for months now – partly because I thought <organic food snob> I would be disappointed. The Ferry Building FM in San Francisco was such a nice market and I just didn’t think I would find anything here that would measure up. After some kind persuasion from friends last night, I finally gave in, and I have to say it was really good.

We wandered through the whole thing and saw lots of yummy stuff – we quickly filled up the 2 shopping bags we brought with us – and ran into two of our friends there as well. Nice bonus! Here’s a little bit from the excursion.

mexbrex
Our breakfast – J. had the chorizo & egg burrito and I had the homemade cheese tamale – both spicy but very good. We sat on the curb in the sun and chowed down.

plant vendor
Succulent & Cactus Paradise. We came across a plant seller who had all sorts of exotic succulents and cactus’ from all over the world. I think I’m going to be seeing alot of these guys over the coming months. We bought only one plant – for $6 – but will be back next week for the “firesticks“. They had already sold out for the day.

kern
First bite of the roasted corn on the cob – my post-tamale dessert.

bounty

Today’s bounty. Giant Artichoke, Purple Carrots (organic), Plum Tomatoes (pesticide free), Guatemalan Fair Trade Coffee (organic), Tangerines, Haas Avocado (organic), Local Wildflower Honey, Basil (organic) and Brussel Sprouts. I have a strong feeling that getting back to shopping a farmers market on a regular basis will probably change our dining out frequency.

newsucc
Blurry shot of our new african succulent. It will get about 2 feet tall and if allowed will spread 4-5 feet wide. For now he’ll live in a pot. We also got some golden sage & oregano to add to our herb selection.
