Early last week the wondrous sight of a single yellow flower thrilled me. It was beginning to look like the daily conversations with the tomato plants were starting to pay off. The plants had survived the first few weeks and seemed to be growing well – the flower represented short-term success.
But then something crazy happened – over the past 7 days the plants went into hyper drive. The single yellow flower turned into many and the squash and zucchini got in on the act too. (The cucumber plant is taking its sweet ole time, but maybe its just being moody because I insist on calling it a Pickle plant) On Saturday I almost freaked out when i lifted the leaves to find (yes!!) a teeny tiny zucchini in the making with a long slender blossom on the end. Whoo-Hoo!! How cute is that?
But it gets even better… the next day the squash blossom opened up. It only lasted for a day, but what a treat! I’m sure years from now, when I’ve grown my body weight in zucchini 10x over, the first blossom of the year may not thrill me as much – but for now – i absolutely love it. (not totally sure what the deal is with the weird little mushrooms, but they died the next day)
And I just have to stick in the “before” photo of the little plant from 4 weeks ago.
And on that note – here’s the baby tomatoes from last month and as they look this past weekend. The buckets are working out so well!
Still trying to decide on the best cage technique but really like this idea…
